Sector specific security experts has warned cybersecurity firms especially those affiliated with or working for the aviation/ airline sector to be on alert and take necessary efforts geared at mitigating against cyberattack in the sector, this is following a recent data breach suffered by Qantas and Hawaiian Airlines.
The Qantas breach which follows a cyberattack on Hawaiian Airlines, a subsidiary of Alaska Air Group, just days prior, raising concerns of a wider campaign targeting aviation.
Cybersecurity firm Mandiant warned that the hacking group Scattered Spider—linked to high-profile ransomware and social engineering attacks—may be expanding operations to target global airline operators, including those in Australia.
“While Scattered Spider has a history of targeting global organizations including those in Australia, it’s too early to tell if they’ve expanded their current targeting to Australian airline organizations,” said Charles Carmakal, CTO at Mandiant Consulting.
Another group, UNC6040, known for telephone-based social engineering attacks, is also being monitored in connection with breaches in the transportation sector.
Authorities are investigating whether the breach at Qantas shares any hallmarks with these previous incidents.
