Tokyo, 1 July 2025 – Taoiseach Micheál Martin begins a four-day official visit to Japan today, focusing on strengthening Ireland–Japan bilateral relations, trade, and cultural cooperation.
During his time in Tokyo, the Taoiseach will meet with Prime Minister Ishiba to advance the 2022 Joint Leaders’ Statement and discuss shared global priorities. He will also officially open Ireland House Tokyo, the new premises of the Embassy of Ireland and the headquarters for Ireland’s trade and investment agencies in Japan.
In Osaka, the Taoiseach will visit Expo 2025, where he will tour the Irish Pavilion, which showcases Ireland’s innovation and cultural heritage. The visit will conclude in Hiroshima, where he will lay a wreath at the Cenotaph to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing.
Speaking ahead of the visit, Taoiseach Martin said:
“Japan is a key strategic partner for Ireland. We share common values and global priorities. I look forward to deepening our bilateral ties, opening the new Ireland House Tokyo, and honouring the memory of those lost in Hiroshima 80 years ago—a powerful reminder of the enduring importance of peace.”
