The Health Service Executive (HSE) has announced a €2.3 million investment to improve cancer services across the south west of Ireland, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen regional healthcare delivery.
The funding will be directed toward enhancing diagnostic capacity, expanding treatment services, and increasing staffing levels in key oncology units. The investment is expected to benefit facilities in counties including Cork, Kerry, and surrounding areas, where demand for cancer care continues to grow.
According to the HSE, the initiative aligns with the objectives of the National Cancer Strategy, which aims to ensure equitable access to high-quality cancer services across the country. The allocation will support the recruitment of additional specialists, improve access to advanced diagnostics, and reduce waiting times for patients.
“This funding represents a meaningful step toward addressing capacity challenges and improving outcomes for patients in the south west,” the HSE said in a statement.
The investment follows calls from clinicians and advocacy groups for greater regional support, particularly in light of rising cancer incidence and increased referrals.
Further details on specific allocations and implementation timelines are expected in the coming weeks.
