PAUL, Minn. – 27 June 2025 — A solemn ceremony unfolded at the Minnesota State Capitol as thousands of mourners, including former President Joe Biden, passed through the Rotunda to pay final respects to former House Speaker Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their golden retriever Gilbert, all victims of a politically motivated shooting earlier this month.
Historic Tribute
- First-ever couple—and dog—to lie in state at the Minnesota Capitol Rotunda. Melissa served as House Speaker Emerita and top-ranking Democrat; Mark received the honour alongside her. Gilbert, euthanised after being shot, was memorialised with his urn and photo.
- Thousands lined up along the Capitol plaza and adjacent avenues to pay their respects, with caskets surrounded by flowers and portraits.
Biden’s Visit
- Joe Biden arrived late afternoon, entering the cleared Rotunda alone. He paused, made the sign of the cross, knelt briefly, and quietly departed.

Context and Aftermath
- The Hortmans were shot at their Brooklyn Park home on 14 June, in what officials described as a politically motivated assassination. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also wounded but survived.
- Suspect Vance Boelter, 57, was arrested after Minnesota’s largest-ever manhunt. He’s charged federally and at state level; court proceedings are advancing.
Funeral Plans
- A private funeral is scheduled for Saturday morning at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis. Both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris plan to attend, though neither will speak.
