Ireland – 24 June 2025 | More than 7,500 people from 143 countries will officially become Irish citizens during a series of seven ceremonies taking place yesterday and today at the INEC in Killarney, Co. Kerry.
Organised by the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, the citizenship ceremonies mark a significant milestone in Ireland’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Attendees, who come from all 32 counties on the island, will declare fidelity to the Irish nation and loyalty to the State, thereby becoming full Irish citizens.
Presiding over the ceremonies is Judge Paddy McMahon, who will administer the Declaration of Fidelity and Loyalty, formally conferring Irish citizenship.
Government Leaders Celebrate National Milestone
The ceremonies will be attended by Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration Jim O’Callaghan, Minister of State for Migration Colm Brophy, and Minister of State for International Law, Law Reform and Youth Justice Niall Collins.
“This ceremony marks an important milestone in the lives of those receiving Irish citizenship,” said Minister O’Callaghan. “Their contributions will undoubtedly strengthen the fabric of our nation.”
Minister Brophy highlighted migration’s positive role in Irish society, while Minister Collins underscored the symbolic and legal importance of citizenship.
Rising Numbers Reflect Modernisation
Since their introduction in 2011, citizenship ceremonies have become a central part of Ireland’s naturalisation process. With the latest events in Killarney, more than 206,400 people have been granted Irish citizenship to date.
Recent reforms have modernised the application process:
- Digital applications and online payments
- Electronic vetting (eVetting)
- Reduced processing times—from 15 months in 2023 to 8 months in 2024
In 2024, the Department processed nearly 31,000 applications, up from 20,000 in 2023 and 12,000 in previous years.
