JetZero, a California-based aviation startup, has announced plans to construct a $5 billion manufacturing facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, to produce its next-generation blended-wing-body aircraft. The plant is expected to create 14,500 jobs and support both direct manufacturing and engineering roles, as well as indirect jobs with suppliers.
Blended-Wing-Body Aircraft: A Game-Changer in Aviation
JetZero’s Z4 aircraft features a blended-wing-body design, which merges the body and wings into a single aerodynamic structure, unlike traditional tube-and-wing configurations. The aircraft is expected to:
- Seat up to 250 passengers while weighing one-third less than comparable jets.
- Fly at higher altitudes, reducing atmospheric drag.
- Improve fuel efficiency and cut emissions by up to 50%.
Industry Support and Airline Partnerships
JetZero has secured major backing from airlines, including Alaska Airlines and United, with United conditionally agreeing to purchase up to 200 aircraft. Delta Air Lines has partnered with JetZero to develop a full-scale demonstrator aircraft for the U.S. Air Force, scheduled for testing in 2027.
North Carolina’s Role in Clean Energy and Aerospace
North Carolina has emerged as a key beneficiary of climate tech investments following the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). JetZero was awarded a Fueling Aviation’s Sustainable Transition (FAST) grant through the IRA, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable aviation.
Construction Timeline and Economic Impact
- Construction begins in early 2026, with commercial aircraft production targeted for 2032.
- The facility will be located at Piedmont Triad International Airport, offering state-of-the-art innovation in composite materials and manufacturing.
- The North Carolina government has approved $1.5 billion in incentives, with additional support from Greensboro and Guilford County.
