President Trump Leaves G7 Summit Early Due to Middle East Crisis

World

U.S. President Donald Trump is cutting short his visit to the G7 summit in Canada, citing the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The White House confirmed that Trump will depart Monday night after dinner with world leaders, skipping key discussions scheduled for Tuesday.

Urgency Over Middle East Tensions

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump’s early departure was due to “what’s going on in the Middle East”. The president has been vocal about Iran’s nuclear program, warning that Tehran’s residents should evacuate immediately.

Trump’s decision comes as Israel ramps up military operations against Iran, with reports suggesting intensified strikes on Iranian targets. The U.S. National Security Council is expected to meet upon Trump’s return to Washington.

Impact on G7 Discussions

Trump’s departure means he will miss bilateral meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, as well as discussions on Russia sanctions. European leaders had hoped to secure U.S. support for tougher measures against Moscow, but Trump has expressed skepticism about additional sanctions.

Despite leaving early, Trump signed a trade deal with the United Kingdom before his departure, finalizing an agreement with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

G7 Leaders React

French President Emmanuel Macron described Trump’s exit as “positive”, suggesting it could help advance ceasefire negotiations in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged that Trump’s absence could complicate efforts to reach a unified G7 statement on global security.
