Former England football captain David Beckham and Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman have been knighted in King Charles III’s annual birthday honours list, recognizing their contributions to sport and the arts. Sculptor Antony Gormley was also named a Companion of Honour.
David Beckham’s Knighthood
Beckham, 50, began his football career at Manchester United in 1993, making nearly 400 appearances and winning multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, and the Champions League. He later played for Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, and Inter Milan, while earning 115 caps for England, including 58 as captain.
Beyond football, Beckham has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2005 and became an ambassador for the King’s Foundation in 2023. His knighthood means his wife, Victoria Beckham, will now be formally styled as Lady Beckham.
Gary Oldman’s Recognition in Drama
Oldman, 67, started his career in theatre, including time with the Royal Shakespeare Company, before rising to prominence in film. He won an Academy Award for Best Actor in 2018 for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour”. His film credits include The Dark Knight Trilogy, the Harry Potter series, and the recent TV spy drama “Slow Horses”.
Other Honourees
- Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who, was knighted for his charitable work, particularly his long-standing support of the Teenage Cancer Trust.
- Elaine Paige, musical theatre star, novelist Pat Barker, and ceramics designer Emma Bridgewater received damehoods.
- More than 1,200 individuals were honoured, with a focus on public service and contributions to British society.
