Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced a $9 billion credit line and new infrastructure investments for countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, signaling a deepening of Beijing’s economic engagement with the region.

The pledge was made during Xi’s address to leaders of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) gathered in Beijing. The funding is expected to support development in key sectors such as transportation, energy, and digital infrastructure, while reinforcing China’s growing influence in the Global South.

The initiative underscores China’s continued efforts to expand its Belt and Road footprint and strengthen economic ties beyond Asia, at a time when many countries in the region are seeking alternatives to traditional Western financing.
