Patrick Tiernan, a UCD Business and Law graduate, has been named the new Chief Executive Officer of Lloyd’s, the world’s leading insurance and reinsurance marketplace. His appointment marks a significant leadership transition at the historic institution, following the departure of John Neal, who served as CEO since 2018.
A Proven Leader in the Insurance Sector
Tiernan, who previously held the role of Chief of Markets at Lloyd’s since 2021, has nearly three decades of experience in the insurance industry. His career includes senior positions at Aviva, StarStone Insurance, and Zurich, where he played a pivotal role in underwriting, market oversight, and global regulatory affairs.

As CEO, Tiernan is expected to focus on strengthening underwriting discipline, enhancing market efficiency, and driving innovation through initiatives like Lloyd’s Lab and Lloyd’s Academy. Tiernan will officially assume his role on June 1, 2025, pending regulatory approval from the Prudential Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority.
