British counter-terrorism police have arrested eight men, including seven Iranian nationals, in two separate operations described as among the most significant in recent years. The arrests come amid growing concerns over Iran-linked activities in the UK, with officials warning of an increase in Tehran-backed plots.
Major Counter-Terrorism Raids
The first operation, conducted on Saturday, led to the arrest of five men, four of whom are Iranian nationals, on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. The arrests took place across West London, Swindon, and Greater Manchester, targeting individuals allegedly involved in a plot against a specific, undisclosed location. Authorities are still working to confirm the nationality of the fifth suspect.
Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, stated that investigations are ongoing to determine motivations and assess any further risks to the public.
Second Operation Targets Espionage
In a separate but unrelated operation, three more Iranian nationals—aged 39, 44, and 55—were arrested in London under the National Security Act (NSA), which targets foreign state interference and espionage. Police searches are continuing at the suspects’ residences.
Government Response and Rising Threats
Interior Minister Yvette Cooper described the operations as some of the biggest counter-state threat and counter-terrorism investigations in recent years. The arrests follow warnings from MI5 that Iran has backed over 20 plots posing potential threats to British citizens since 2022.
The UK government has placed Iran on the highest tier of its Foreign Influence Registration Scheme, requiring Tehran to formally register its activities or face prosecution.
