Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal for a 72-hour ceasefire during the May 9 Victory Day celebrations, labeling it a “theatrical” gesture. Instead, Zelenskyy advocates for a 30-day unconditional truce, aligning with a previous U.S. suggestion. He emphasized that a brief ceasefire would be insufficient to achieve meaningful peace and warned that Ukraine cannot guarantee the safety of foreign dignitaries attending Moscow’s May 9 parade .
Zelenskyy expressed skepticism about Russia’s commitment to peace, stating that Putin’s conditions for a 30-day ceasefire aim to weaken Ukraine’s position. He reiterated that Ukraine is prepared for peace but requires Russia to demonstrate genuine willingness to end the conflict .
In the meantime, hostilities continue. Russian drone strikes on Kharkiv on May 2 injured 46 people and caused significant damage. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy condemned the attacks and called for enhanced international support, particularly in air defense systems. Both Ukraine and Russia reported intercepting numerous drones and missiles during recent engagements .
The situation remains tense as diplomatic efforts continue, with Ukraine seeking a substantial and unconditional ceasefire to pave the way for lasting peace.
