In a bizarre turn of events, an armored truck traveling through Oak Park, Illinois, inadvertently dropped three bags of cash onto the road, leading to an estimated $300,000 loss as dozens of people rushed to collect the money before fleeing the scene.

Incident Details

According to the Oak Park Police Department (OPPD), the incident occurred on April 22, 2025, at approximately 5:07 p.m. local time. A Brinks Home Security representative reported that the truck was moving southbound on the 300 block of South Austin Boulevard when its backdoor unexpectedly opened, causing the bags of money to fall onto the street.

Upon returning to the location, the Brinks employee witnessed between 50 to 100 individuals grabbing the cash and escaping, either on foot or in vehicles. Authorities confirmed that as of April 25, no arrests had been made.

Similar Incidents in the Past

This is not the first time an armored truck has unintentionally scattered money on the streets. In November 2021, a similar event unfolded in California, when an armored truck’s door burst open on Interstate 5 near San Diego, spilling cash across the freeway. Drivers stopped their vehicles to collect the money, prompting law enforcement to urge individuals to return the funds.

Another case occurred in May 2018, when a Brinks armored truck lost a substantial amount of cash near the Sam Jones Expressway in Indiana due to an unexpected door malfunction.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the Chicago incident, but as of now, the missing funds remain unaccounted for. Representatives from Brinks Home Security and the OPPD have yet to provide further updates.
