Wrightbus Champions UK’s Green Hydrogen Future with £6.5 billion Project HySpeed

Wrightbus, the Northern Ireland-based manufacturer renowned for pioneering hydrogen-powered buses, is at the forefront of a transformative £6.5 billion initiative aimed at revolutionising the UK’s green hydrogen sector. Dubbed Project HySpeed, this collaborative venture unites major industry players—including Centrica, Johnson Matthey, JCB, and ITM Power—to establish a robust hydrogen production infrastructure across the UK.

A Vision for a Sustainable Future

Project HySpeed’s ambitious goal is to develop 1 gigawatt of hydrogen production capacity by 2030. This initiative is poised to generate approximately 24,300 jobs, significantly contributing to the UK’s economic growth and its commitment to net-zero emissions. The project aligns with the government’s Hydrogen Allocation Rounds (HAR2), which aim to bolster the UK’s position as a leader in clean energy technologies.

Strategic Impact on the UK’s Hydrogen Landscape

The consortium’s efforts are expected to reduce the cost of green hydrogen to around £5.96 per kilogram, making it more competitive and accessible. This cost reduction is crucial for the widespread adoption of hydrogen across various sectors, including transportation, industry, and heating.

Jo Bamford, Executive Chairman of HydraB Power and a key proponent of the project, emphasised the strategic importance of hydrogen in achieving energy security and independence for the UK. He highlighted that “hydrogen offers us the opportunity to be energy secure and energy independent,” reflecting the project’s alignment with national energy goals.

Wrightbus’s Role in the Hydrogen Revolution

Wrightbus’s involvement in Project HySpeed underscores its pivotal role in the UK’s green transport sector. The company has already made significant strides in hydrogen technology, producing the world’s first hydrogen-powered double-decker bus, the Hydroliner.
