World

Pope Francis has passed away this morning at 7:35 AM in Vatican City, as confirmed by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo. In his announcement, Cardinal Farrell described the late pontiff as “the Bishop of Rome” whose life was “dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church” .

A Legacy of Faith and Inclusion

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis became the 266th pope in 2013, succeeding Benedict XVI. He was the first pope from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere, and the first Jesuit pope. Throughout his papacy, he emphasized themes of mercy, social justice, and interfaith dialogue, often reaching out to marginalized communities and advocating for the poor.

Cardinal Farrell, who has worked closely with Pope Francis, has noted that the pontiff’s greatest achievement was teaching the world to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ, embracing all people, not just Catholics, and opening the arms of the Church to the entire world (Vatican News).

Transition of Power and Funeral Arrangements

As per Vatican tradition, Cardinal Farrell will oversee the immediate responsibilities following the pope’s death. This includes confirming the death, sealing the papal apartments, and notifying the College of Cardinals. The funeral is expected to take place between four and six days after the pope’s death, with the burial occurring in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, as per Pope Francis’s personal wishes (POLITICO, The Citizen).

The election of a new pope, known as the conclave, will commence approximately 15 to 20 days after the funeral. Eligible cardinals under the age of 80 will gather in the Sistine Chapel to elect the next leader of the Catholic Church (The Telegraph).

Remembering Pope Francis

Pope Francis’s death marks the end of a transformative era in the Catholic Church. His commitment to humility, reform, and outreach has left an indelible mark on the global faith community. As the Church enters a period of transition, the legacy of Pope Francis will continue to inspire and guide its followers.
