Apple Slashes Global Emissions by 60%, Accelerates Toward 2030 Carbon Neutrality Goal

CSR/ECO/ESG

Apple has achieved a 60% reduction in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions since 2015 and is advancing rapidly toward its Apple 2030 goal — to become carbon neutral across its entire business, including supply chain and product lifecycle.

In its 2024 Environmental Progress Report, the company outlined significant strides across energy use, supply chain practices, materials sourcing, waste management, and water conservation.

“As we get closer to 2030, the work gets even harder — and we’re meeting the challenge with innovation, collaboration and urgency,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s VP of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives.

🌱 Key Achievements in 2024:

1. Renewable Energy & Supply Chain Emissions

  • 17.8 gigawatts of renewable electricity delivered by suppliers — a 17% year-on-year increase.
  • 21.8 million tonnes of GHG emissions avoided through clean energy use.
  • An additional 2 million tonnes avoided through energy efficiency upgrades.
  • Apple aims for 100% renewable energy across its supply chain by 2030.

2. Semiconductor & Display Emissions (F-GHGs)

  • 26 semiconductor suppliers and all display suppliers have committed to cut 90% of fluorinated greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
  • These efforts already avoided 8.4 million tonnes of emissions last year.

3. Materials: Circular Innovation

  • Apple now uses 99% recycled rare earth elements in magnets.
  • 99% recycled cobalt in Apple-designed batteries, covering over 97% of its total cobalt usage.

4. Zero Waste & Water Stewardship

  • 600,000 tonnes of waste diverted from landfills in 2024 alone (3.6 million tonnes since 2015).
  • 53 trillion litres of water saved in 2024, with over 340 trillion litres conserved since 2013 via its Supplier Clean Water Program.
  • Apple has already met 40% of its 2030 water replenishment goal in high-stress regions.

5. Product Sustainability

  • The Mac mini is now Apple’s first carbon-neutral Mac.
  • The new MacBook Air features over 55% recycled content.
  • Carbon-neutral Apple Watches are available across all material types.
  • Apple offsets only residual emissions, prioritizing real-world reductions first.

🌍 Earth Day & Consumer Engagement

To mark Earth Day 2025, Apple has launched:

  • In-store recycling promotions with 10% discounts on accessories (valid through May 16).
  • Apple Watch fitness challenges, themed Apple TV+ content, and new Time to Walk episodes focused on environmental storytelling.
