Diplomatic Rift Deepens: Algeria Orders Expulsion of 12 French Embassy Staff Based on Espionage Allegations

World

Algiers – Tensions between France and Algeria have escalated sharply after Algeria ordered the expulsion of 12 French embassy personnel, giving them 48 hours to leave the country, according to a statement by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Monday.

The diplomatic fallout follows the indictment of three Algerian nationals in France, one of whom is reportedly a consular official, in connection with the alleged abduction of Amir Boukhors, a high-profile Algerian dissident and government critic. Boukhors, 41, is widely followed on social media and was reportedly granted asylum in France in 2023.

French authorities suspect the trio of involvement in orchestrating Boukhors’ forcible disappearance in 2023, a case that has since gained international attention. Barrot, in public remarks, urged the Algerian government to reconsider the expulsions, warning that France is prepared to “respond immediately” if the move is not reversed.

“We are calling on Algeria to abandon this decision, which is disproportionate and unjustified,” Barrot said in a statement carried by multiple French media outlets.

Background and Context

The incident comes amid an already fragile relationship between Paris and Algiers, strained by historical colonial tensions, disputes over migration, and security cooperation in North Africa. Algeria’s move to expel French diplomats signals a significant deterioration, possibly aimed at signaling sovereignty and rejecting perceived foreign interference in domestic affairs.

Amir Boukhors, also known online as “Amir DZ,” is a well-known YouTube and social media personality who has accused Algerian officials of corruption and abuse of power. His online following exceeds one million, making him one of the most influential political commentators in the Algerian diaspora.

French investigators have not publicly detailed the evidence tying the suspects to Boukhors’ disappearance but have described the case as a “serious breach” of diplomatic norms.

Diplomatic Implications

France’s warning of a potential retaliatory diplomatic response raises concerns of a tit-for-tat escalation that could impact bilateral relations across a range of issues, including trade, counterterrorism cooperation, and immigration policy.

The Algerian government has yet to issue an official explanation for the expulsions. However, analysts suggest the move may be an attempt to preempt further diplomatic embarrassment following the indictments.
