GreenLine Mobility Commits $1B to Supercharge India’s Green Freight Future

CSR/ECO/ESG

Mumbai, India – April 2025 | In a landmark push toward sustainable transport, GreenLine Mobility Solutions, backed by the Essar Group, has announced a $1 billion investment to expand its green logistics fleet and infrastructure across India.

The investment includes $275 million in equity from promoters and prominent investors, including Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath, and is part of GreenLine’s plan to scale its fleet from 650 to 10,000 heavy-duty LNG and electric trucks.

“India’s vision for a low-carbon future is taking shape, and GreenLine is proud to be at the forefront,” said Anshuman Ruia, Director, Essar Group.

Clean, Cost-Effective, and Scalable

The initiative will also see the development of 100 LNG refueling stations, EV charging hubs, and battery-swapping points, establishing a national support network for clean trucking. This infrastructure is being developed in partnership with Iveco, the Italian commercial vehicle manufacturer, through a related associate company.

CEO Anand Mimani explained the vision:

“We’re not just adding trucks—we’re building the backbone of sustainable logistics in India.”

Despite the high capital outlay, GreenLine says it will offer diesel-equivalent pricing to customers, allowing corporates to cut emissions at no extra cost while potentially earning carbon credits.

A Shift Driven by Urgency

India’s freight sector is a major emitter, with over 4 million diesel trucks contributing 15% of national CO₂ emissions. GreenLine’s existing fleet has already logged 38 million kilometers and avoided 10,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. The company aims to reduce 1 million tonnes annually as its green fleet scales.

Investor Nikhil Kamath, who invested $20 million in the latest funding round, called the move both strategic and necessary:

“Green mobility isn’t just a trend—it’s inevitable. This shift is happening—with or without you.”

Policy-Aligned and Future-Ready

India’s green freight sector still trails China, where LNG trucks now account for over 9% of the heavy-duty fleet. But domestic policies are aligning fast. GreenLine’s expansion complements the government’s decarbonisation goals and PM Narendra Modi’s e-mobility push.

“This investment in road logistics decarbonisation aligns with the government’s e-drive initiative,” added Ruia.

With this major investment, GreenLine positions itself not just as a logistics provider, but as a key enabler in India’s green transition, targeting heavy industries from FMCG and e-commerce to oil, gas, and mining.
