UN Shipping Agency Debates Global Emissions Tax for Shipping Industry

Human Rights

The United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO) is in talks to implement global regulations aimed at reducing the climate impact of international shipping, which accounts for roughly 3% of global emissions. A key proposal on the table is the introduction of a global emissions tax, alongside a new marine fuel standard to curb pollution.

Discussions are currently underway in London, with island nations from the Pacific and Caribbean backing the levy, while larger economies such as China and Brazil express reservations. If adopted, this would be the first-ever global emissions tax targeting a specific industry, setting a precedent for UN-led climate action.

The IMO aims to finalize these measures, marking a critical moment for shipping’s contribution to global climate efforts.
