Ireland is set to significantly expand its aircraft mechanic apprenticeship program, with the number of training places increasing from 79 in 2024 to 160 by September 2025. This initiative follows a thorough consultation with industry stakeholders in the aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul sector.
Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science James Lawless TD announced the expansion, emphasizing the need for an adaptable apprenticeship system. He stated, “It is essential the apprenticeship system is agile and can scale up or down quickly as required, based on the dynamic needs of the sectors we serve.”
The new initiative is a key part of Ireland’s broader Action Plan for Apprenticeship 2021-2025, which seeks to better align apprenticeship programs with industry needs. Minister of State Marian Harkin TD highlighted its importance, noting the growing value apprenticeships bring to both employers and trainees.
The expansion is seen as critical to the continued growth of Ireland’s aviation industry, which manages about 60% of the world’s leased aircraft. Declan Fitzpatrick, CEO of the Irish Aviation Authority, noted that the aircraft maintenance sector is valued at €370 million and employs over 3,200 people. He stressed that more apprenticeships are essential to meet rising global demand.
Plans also include a national Centre of Excellence for aircraft mechanic training, to be established by 2028, aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability and high industry standards.
