China’s Shipbuilding and Tech Dominance Outpaces the U.S, a Worrying Shift in what Should be a Balanced Scale.

World

In 2024, China’s dominance in global shipbuilding became evident as the China State Shipbuilding Corporation delivered over 250 ships, totaling 14 million gross tons. By contrast, U.S. shipbuilders produced only five ships, accounting for just 76,000 gross tons. This stark contrast highlights China’s unparalleled scale and efficiency in maritime production.

On the tech front, China has surpassed the United States in 37 of 44 critical technologies, including advanced robotics and autonomous systems, according to a report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). This shift marks a significant challenge to U.S. leadership in global technology.

The growing capabilities of China in both shipbuilding and technology are reshaping global industries, presenting new strategic and economic challenges to the U.S. As noted by CSIS experts, these advancements in both military and civilian domains—such as dual-use shipyards—raise concerns over national security and the protection of intellectual property.
