Syria’s interim President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has officially established a National Security Council through a new presidential decree aimed at addressing the country’s security and political challenges during its transitional phase.
The National Security Council, chaired by the president, will play a crucial role in coordinating national security policies. It will focus on enhancing Syria’s security infrastructure and addressing ongoing political issues. The council’s members include key ministers—Foreign Affairs, Defense, Interior—and the Director of General Intelligence. Additionally, two advisory positions will be filled by experts appointed by the president, with a technical adviser specializing in scientific and technical affairs also joining the group.
The council is expected to convene regularly or upon the president’s request, with decisions made collectively. The decree underscores the council’s role in aligning with Syria’s supreme national interests and ensuring effective collaboration among state institutions.
The decree has taken immediate effect, with relevant institutions instructed to enforce its provisions.
