The health situation in North Darfur, Sudan, has reached a critical point, with over 200 health facilities in the state capital, El Fasher, currently non-functional due to ongoing conflict. According to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the humanitarian situation is dire, particularly in displacement camps surrounding the city.
Struggling Health System
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that Sudan’s health system is under relentless attack, with nearly 150 recorded assaults on healthcare centers since the outbreak of the conflict. However, Dujarric emphasized that the actual number is likely much higher, underscoring the severe risks faced by healthcare workers and facilities. This relentless assault has compounded critical shortages of medical supplies and personnel, leaving the population vulnerable to disease and inadequate care.
Humanitarian Urgency
As of mid-February, North Darfur remains one of the hardest-hit regions in Sudan, with health services unable to meet the overwhelming needs of the displaced population. The UN continues to call for immediate access and increased support to mitigate the growing humanitarian crisis.
