A new jihadist group, the Lakurawa, carried out a brutal revenge attack in northwest Nigeria over the weekend, killing 11 people and burning down seven villages. The militants targeted Birnin Dede and six surrounding villages in Kebbi State, near the border with Niger, to avenge the death of their commander, Maigemu, killed by Nigerian security forces earlier in the week.
According to Kebbi State police spokesman Nafiu Abubakar, the attack occurred on Sunday, and it follows a series of escalating tensions in the region. The Lakurawa group, believed to have members from Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, has become increasingly active in the area. They have established camps in Kebbi’s Tsauni Forest, from where they conduct raids, steal livestock, and impose taxes on local communities.
The group’s violence has intensified in recent months, with deadly attacks on civilians, including the killing of six people earlier last week. The presence of Lakurawa militants in the region is exacerbating insecurity in northwest Nigeria, which has seen a rise in jihadist activity and insurgent groups.
