UN Security Council Warns Sudan’s Rival Government Could Escalate Conflict

World

The UN Security Council has expressed “grave concern” over a recent charter signed by Sudan’s paramilitary forces, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which aims to establish a “government of peace and unity” in areas under their control. The RSF, locked in conflict with Sudan’s army since April 2023, signed the charter with its allies last month, further complicating the country’s already dire situation.

The Council warned that such a move could worsen Sudan’s ongoing civil war, fragment the nation, and intensify the humanitarian crisis. The Security Council called on all parties to immediately cease hostilities and engage in political dialogue to negotiate a lasting ceasefire.

The situation in Sudan remains critical, with the international community urging diplomatic efforts to halt the violence and stabilize the region.
