Germany has announced it is halting new development aid to Rwanda, following accusations that the East African nation is supporting the M23 rebel group in the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development confirmed on Tuesday that it is also reviewing its existing aid commitments to Rwanda.
Berlin communicated its decision to Rwanda in advance, urging the country to cease its support for the M23 rebels, who have made significant territorial gains in eastern Congo. The United Nations, alongside Congo and several Western governments, has accused Rwanda of backing the rebel group, a charge Rwanda denies.
In October 2022, Germany pledged €93.6 million ($98 million) in aid to Rwanda for the period from 2022 to 2024. However, amid growing concerns over Rwanda’s involvement in the conflict, Germany’s development ministry has chosen to reassess the continuation of this financial support.
This move adds to mounting international pressure on Rwanda, with Western powers demanding greater transparency and accountability regarding its role in the conflict in Congo. The situation remains tense as the international community awaits Rwanda’s response to these allegations.
