Ghana’s defence capabilities have received a significant boost with a €50 million ($52 million) military aid package from the European Union, aimed at enhancing the country’s response to growing security threats. The assistance, provided under the European Peace Facility, includes advanced communication systems, riverine assets, and essential civil engineering tools such as foldable boats, tipper trucks, and loaders.
The security landscape in the Sahel region has become increasingly volatile due to a surge in extremist activities. Recent events, such as the January 2025 killing of 28 soldiers in Benin, underscore the expanding cross-border threat. The instability in neighboring Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, following military coups, has further exacerbated the situation.
As extremist groups push closer to West Africa’s coastal states, Ghana has emerged as a key stabilizing force in the region. The EU’s latest support strengthens Ghana’s ability to secure its borders and prevent insurgents from infiltrating the country, positioning Ghana as a pivotal player in maintaining regional security.
