Toyota Teases Compact, Affordable Electric SUV Ahead of March Reveal

Technology

Toyota is set to expand its electric vehicle (EV) lineup with a new, smaller compact SUV, offering a more affordable alternative to its bZ4X electric SUV. The vehicle, teased ahead of its full reveal on March 11, is expected to provide an exciting option for buyers seeking a budget-friendly EV with elevated driving dynamics and a more compact design.

What We Know So Far

The teaser images provide limited details, but the new model is clearly influenced by Toyota’s upscale Lexus design, featuring angular lines, a distinct notched shoulder, and creased edges across the body. The C-shaped headlights and a full-bar rear taillight are reminiscent of recent Toyota models like the Crown, Prius, and Camry, suggesting a refined, modern look.

This compact EV will likely be around six inches shorter and 3.5 inches lower than the existing bZ4X, which is expected to make it a more maneuverable and city-friendly SUV. The vehicle will be built on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform, the same architecture that supports the bZ4X, with the potential for two different battery options similar to those found in the European Urban Cruiser—either a 49 kWh or 61 kWh battery. For comparison, the bZ4X uses a 72 kWh battery pack, which offers a modest range relative to its price.

Toyota claims the new compact SUV will feature “elevated driving dynamics,” aiming to address one of the key complaints of the bZ4X—its lackluster performance under hard driving conditions, as noted during SUVOTY testing in 2023.

Pricing and Availability

While Toyota has not confirmed specific pricing, the new compact model is expected to be more affordable than the bZ4X, which starts at $38,465 before incentives. Although details are scarce on whether the vehicle will be available in the U.S., it is currently teased only on Toyota’s European newsroom website, suggesting that a European launch is imminent.

Stay tuned for more information following the official unveiling on March 11, where Toyota is expected to provide full specifications and pricing details.
