In a heartfelt ceremony on Monday, the Spanish city of A Coruña officially recognized two Senegalese migrants, Ibrahima Diack and Magatte N’Diaye, with the title of “adopted sons of the city.” Their heroic actions in July 2021, when they tried to save Samuel Luiz, a gay man brutally attacked outside a nightclub, were honored by the city.
Diack and N’Diaye were the only bystanders who intervened when Luiz was viciously assaulted by a homophobic mob. Despite the risks, including the possibility of deportation due to their undocumented status, the men attempted to help Luiz. Tragically, Luiz later succumbed to his injuries, sparking national outrage and leading to the conviction of four attackers, sentenced to 10 to 24 years for the crime.
Councillor Rosalía López, who attended the ceremony, praised their bravery, stating, “Thank you for your example in risking everything despite having a lot to lose.” The men’s intervention stands as a powerful testament to courage and humanity in the face of violence and prejudice.
