UN Urges South Sudan to Expedite Hybrid Court Due to Rising Rights Violations

Human Rights

The United Nations Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan has called on the government to urgently establish a Hybrid Court to ensure accountability for widespread human rights abuses. Speaking at a press conference in Juba on Thursday, UN experts highlighted the growing concern over persistent violations, including entrenched impunity and a lack of governance in key sectors such as justice, healthcare, and education.

The commissioners emphasized that without a functioning judicial system, the country’s ongoing human rights abuses would remain unaddressed. They stressed that the establishment of the Hybrid Court is crucial for holding perpetrators accountable and providing justice for victims. Currently, there is no significant response from the South Sudanese government to these violations, leaving the population vulnerable to further abuse.

The UN experts urged swift action from the government to prioritize the court’s creation as part of efforts to restore rule of law and improve the country’s governance structure.
