On the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion, leaders from Europe and Canada visited Kyiv to reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine’s survival and European security. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and other key European officials arrived in Ukraine’s capital to mark the somber milestone.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), von der Leyen expressed Europe’s unity with Ukraine, stating, “In this fight for survival, it is not only the destiny of Ukraine that is at stake, it’s Europe’s destiny.” This visit highlights the ongoing international backing Ukraine continues to receive, especially as it navigates a shifting global political environment.
As President Volodymyr Zelensky steers the country through ongoing conflict with Russia, the timing of the anniversary was particularly sensitive due to changes in U.S. policy under President Donald Trump. Trump, seeking to fulfill campaign promises to end the war quickly, has raised concerns among European allies and Ukraine over his approach, which some fear may be too conciliatory toward Russia.
In response, European leaders are stepping up their involvement, with European Council President Antonio Costa announcing an emergency summit of EU leaders on March 6 to address Ukraine’s situation. Costa stressed, “We are living a defining moment for Ukraine and European security,” underscoring the growing importance of Europe’s role in the crisis.
Tensions have also risen following Russia’s diplomatic overtures, including reports of a potential meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, raising concerns over a peace settlement that could exclude Ukraine’s interests. Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat, emphasized that any peace deal must involve both Ukraine and Europe, asserting, “If it comes to Europe or Ukraine, then Ukraine and Europe also have to agree to this deal.”
As the war continues, Ukraine faces critical decisions ahead, with European leaders pushing back against efforts they believe could undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
