In a bold move to mediate the ongoing war in Ukraine, former President Donald Trump has revealed his intention to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin face-to-face, signaling the start of peace talks after nearly three years of conflict. Following separate calls with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday, Trump expressed confidence that a resolution could be achieved.
Trump stated that the first meeting with Putin would take place in Saudi Arabia, with the possibility of future visits to each other’s countries to continue negotiations. “I think we’re on the way to getting peace,” Trump told reporters, emphasizing his desire to halt the bloodshed that has devastated Ukraine. Both Putin and Zelenskyy have expressed their willingness to engage in peace talks, according to the confirmations from both governments.
Zelenskyy described his conversation with Trump as “very substantive,” focusing on diplomatic, military, and economic issues. The Ukrainian leader voiced optimism that America’s influence could help push Russia towards peace. In a similar tone, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the talks, which lasted over an hour, and included discussions on a potential prisoner exchange. As part of a deal, Russia released American teacher Marc Fogel, and the U.S. plans to release Russian national Alexander Vinnik.
While the U.S. and Russian officials are expected to meet in Munich on Friday for further discussions, Ukraine has been invited to attend the talks. However, Zelenskyy’s adviser suggested that the Ukrainian president does not anticipate direct meetings with Russian officials at the conference.
European leaders are also weighing in on the peace process. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized the importance of a long-term, sustainable peace for Ukraine, highlighting the need for European involvement. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reinforced the notion that no peace deal should be imposed on Ukraine, underscoring the necessity for the country’s active participation in negotiations.
As the war enters its third year, international efforts to broker a peace deal continue to intensify. Trump’s engagement with both Putin and Zelenskyy signals a significant development in the quest to end the conflict.
