A deadly attack near Gao, in northeastern Mali, has left over 50 people dead following an ambush on a convoy and its army escort on Friday. The assault took place near the village of Kobe, approximately 30 kilometers from Gao, a region plagued by militant activity for more than a decade.

Local officials confirmed that 56 bodies were transported to the hospital in Gao, with casualties also reported among the military escort, though the exact number remains unclear. The attackers, believed to be militants, targeted the convoy in a region notorious for instability, which has seen continued violence spilling over from Burkina Faso and Niger.

This attack underscores the growing security challenges in the Sahel, where armed groups have disrupted peace and stability for years. The latest incident highlights the vulnerability of civilian and military convoys in an area long dominated by insurgent forces.
