Singtel’s regional data center arm, Nxera DCT Pte Ltd., has successfully secured a S$643 million (approximately $476 million) green loan to fund the development of DC Tuas, a state-of-the-art, high-power-density data center in Singapore. This loan, supported by major banks including DBS, OCBC, Standard Chartered, HSBC, and UOB, aligns with Singtel’s commitment to sustainability and will help drive Singapore’s digital economy towards its net-zero goals.
A Green Leap for Data Infrastructure
DC Tuas, set to be one of Singapore’s most advanced green data centers, will be designed with sustainability at its core. The facility is set to operate at high efficiency, integrating next-generation liquid cooling systems to manage intense compute loads while maintaining an impressive Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of less than 1.25. This makes the center well-suited to handle the increasing demand for AI-driven workloads and other enterprise digital needs.
The facility has already received the Green Mark Platinum certification, awarded by Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority, underscoring its commitment to sustainability. When operational in 2026, DC Tuas will feature an innovative design that optimizes energy, land, and water use, with systems in place for water recycling and energy-efficient cooling solutions capable of handling over 30kW per rack.
Singtel’s Sustainability Commitment
The green loan is a part of Singtel’s ongoing sustainable financing strategy, reinforcing the company’s pledge to develop the industry’s most eco-friendly digital assets. Arthur Lang, Singtel’s Group CFO, emphasized the importance of sustainability, stating, “This loan enables us to support Singapore’s digital economy while reducing our carbon footprint in line with our net-zero goals.”
Nxera is also on track to meet its net-zero emissions target by 2028, which includes reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions. The commitment to sustainability is embedded across all of its operations, with future developments designed to be both high-performance and energy-efficient.
Economic and Environmental Impact
By providing cutting-edge infrastructure for AI, cloud computing, and high-intensity compute applications, DC Tuas will bolster Singapore’s standing as a regional hub for digital innovation. Additionally, the project’s green initiatives contribute to Singapore’s broader goals of building a green economy, promoting responsible resource use, and advancing eco-friendly technologies.
This collaboration with major financial institutions underscores the growing importance of sustainable investment in digital infrastructure. As businesses increasingly turn to AI and data analytics, the need for such environmentally conscious facilities will only grow, making the DC Tuas project a crucial step in shaping the future of data centers.
