The BNP Paribas Foundation has launched the 6th edition of its Climate & Biodiversity Initiative, committing €7 million to fund scientific research on ocean and coastal ecosystems. This new initiative aims to tackle pressing environmental challenges such as ocean acidification, coastal erosion, and overfishing—issues that threaten marine life and biodiversity worldwide.
Focus on Ocean Preservation:
The foundation will support 7 to 15 scientific research projects focused on ocean and coastal ecosystems over the next three years. This initiative is part of the broader United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), which aims to advance sustainable management of the world’s oceans. Recognized by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), the program holds the prestigious “Ocean Decade” label, highlighting its alignment with global ocean preservation goals.
Funding and Application Process:
A total of €7 million will be allocated to selected projects, with the funding available for research teams conducting both basic and applied studies on climate change and biodiversity in marine environments. European scientific teams are encouraged to submit applications from January 21 to May 4, 2025. A Scientific Committee will review applications and select the most promising projects for funding.
A Commitment to Long-Term Environmental Action:
This is not the first time BNP Paribas Foundation has committed substantial funds to environmental causes. By 2025, it will have supported over 35 scientific research teams globally, investing €24 million in advancing knowledge and solutions to climate and biodiversity challenges.
Isabelle Giordano, Head of Group Philanthropy at BNP Paribas Foundation, emphasized the importance of philanthropy in driving meaningful change. “By supporting scientists, we act in favor of ocean and coastal areas preservation,” she stated, underscoring the foundation’s dedication to sustainable environmental practices.
Through this initiative, the BNP Paribas Foundation continues to reinforce its position as France’s largest environmental philanthropy program, committed to fostering collaboration and innovation in ocean science.
