The European Union allocated an additional €1 million to the cholera response in South Sudan, as the situation in the country is deteriorating. This emergency funding, coming on top of €1 million allocated in November 2024 for the cholera epidemic, will support our humanitarian partners in replenishing emergency stocks, case management and coordination.
The South Sudan authorities declared a cholera epidemic in October 2024 for the northern town of Renk, the main entry point for refugees and returnees fleeing the conflict in neighbouring Sudan.
Since then, the outbreak has spread across most of the country, including the capital Juba, reaching 26,811 cases and 455 deaths. With the increased number of new arrivals since December 2024 – and an ongoing cholera outbreak in Sudan – it remains difficult to contain the outbreak, while the country’s response capacities are at breaking point.
Background
More than 1 million people have arrived in South Sudan since April 2023, fleeing the war in Sudan. Between December 2024 and 5 January 2025, 120,000 people entered South Sudan.
