UN Mission in Libya Forms New Panel to Break Electoral Deadlock

World

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has announced the creation of a new advisory committee tasked with finding solutions to the ongoing electoral impasse in the country. The committee, comprising 13 men and 7 women, will meet next week in Tripoli to tackle the longstanding issues that have delayed the holding of national elections in Libya.

Libya has been embroiled in political turmoil for over a decade, with the most recent attempt to hold elections in December 2021 failing due to disputes over candidate eligibility. Despite international efforts to stabilize the country, the path to peace and democracy remains fraught with challenges.

UNSMIL emphasized that the committee’s members were selected for their expertise in legal, constitutional, and electoral matters, as well as their ability to facilitate compromise amid Libya’s complex political landscape. Once the committee develops its proposals, they will be presented to the Mission for consideration in the next phase of the political process.

The formation of this panel marks a crucial step in the UN’s continued efforts to support Libya’s transition to a more stable and democratic future.
