On February 6, 2025, the global community will unite once again to honor the lives of migrants who have died, gone missing, or suffered enforced disappearances while attempting to cross dangerous borders. This marks the 10th anniversary of Commemor-Action, a movement that started in 2014 to remember the victims of the Tarajal massacre, when 15 migrants were killed by Spanish Guardia Civil forces while trying to reach Ceuta.
Since then, Commemor-Action has become a powerful transnational mobilization, advocating for justice, truth, and reparations for victims of deadly border regimes. It draws attention to the relentless violence faced by migrants, particularly along migratory routes in Europe, Africa, and the Americas, where countless individuals continue to disappear—often due to the negligence or active involvement of authorities, including coast guards and border police.
Commemor-Action events, held on February 6 each year, amplify the voices of families and communities seeking accountability for the senseless loss of life. These decentralized actions are coordinated across the globe, from the Mediterranean to the Americas, and serve as both protests and remembrances of those lost in the journey for a better life.
The initiative’s latest push for 2025 aims to bring heightened awareness to the ongoing struggles of families left without answers. With many still searching for missing loved ones, these families and activists continue to demand that migration policies be rooted in human rights, not in death.
This year, Commemor-Action also focuses on connecting global networks of activists, organizations, and families, who continue to push for policies that protect the right to migrate and the freedom of movement for all. It calls on individuals and groups worldwide to take action, share their initiatives, and stand in solidarity with those who fight for justice and dignity.
