TA’ZIZ has taken a significant step toward strengthening the UAE’s industrial and economic diversification by awarding a $1.7 billion EPC contract to SAMSUNG E&A for the development of the country’s first world-scale methanol production plant. Located in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Abu Dhabi, the plant will be a pioneering facility powered by clean energy from the grid, marking a critical milestone in the nation’s push for sustainability.
A Groundbreaking Plant for Sustainable Chemicals
The 1.8 million tons per annum (mtpa) methanol plant will be one of the world’s most energy-efficient facilities of its kind, aimed at advancing the UAE’s chemicals sector and reinforcing its position as a global leader in sustainable chemicals production.
Expected to be completed by 2028, the plant is designed to bolster the UAE’s industrial landscape, enhancing its ability to produce advanced chemicals in line with the country’s broader economic diversification goals. The project is also a key component of TA’ZIZ’s vision to create an integrated chemicals ecosystem in the Al Dhafra region.
Collaboration at the Core of Innovation
Mashal Saoud Al-Kindi, CEO of TA’ZIZ, highlighted the significance of the partnership with SAMSUNG E&A in driving the UAE’s industrial growth. “This landmark EPC contract award is a pivotal step in realizing TA’ZIZ’s vision of creating a world-scale integrated chemicals hub,” Al-Kindi stated. He added that the plant would enhance the UAE’s role in the global chemicals sector, supporting ADNOC’s ambitions to lead in sustainable production.
Hong Namkoong, President and CEO of SAMSUNG E&A, emphasized the collaboration’s role in advancing the UAE’s diversification efforts. “We are honored to contribute to the UAE’s sustainable growth,” he said, underscoring the project’s role in shaping the country as a global hub for advanced methanol production.
Expanding the UAE’s Chemical Value Chain
The methanol plant is the cornerstone of TA’ZIZ’s broader plan to produce 4.7 million tons per annum of chemicals by 2028, including low-carbon ammonia, PVC, vinyl chloride monomer, and caustic soda. This expansion will allow the UAE to produce key chemicals for the first time locally, reducing its dependence on imports and advancing the nation’s efforts toward economic diversification and industrialization.
With this groundbreaking project, TA’ZIZ is not only enhancing the UAE’s role in the global chemicals market but also taking a significant step toward sustainable industrial practices that will shape the future of the country’s economy for decades to come.
