Human Right Groups Urges Action Against Boko Haram After Deadly Attack in Nigeria

Amnesty International (AI) and other human rights groups has called for urgent action against Boko Haram following a brutal attack on civilians in Nigeria’s Borno State that left over 40 people dead. In a statement released on Wednesday, AI condemned the attack, which targeted farmers and fishermen in the Dumba community near Baga. The assault highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis in northeastern Nigeria, as Boko Haram continues its violent campaign against civilians.

Isa Sanusi, Director of AI Nigeria, stressed the group’s blatant disregard for human life and international humanitarian law. According to reports, the attackers rounded up men from the community, executing them at close range, while also pursuing those who tried to escape. Many others were left injured or missing, with mass burials being planned. This attack is part of a broader pattern of violence, including abductions and looting, which has escalated in the region.

The international community has been repeatedly alerted to these atrocities, with AI documenting war crimes committed by both Boko Haram and Nigerian military forces. The organization calls for accountability for both sides in the conflict, which has displaced over two million people and led to significant human rights violations since 2011.

Boko Haram, responsible for the 2014 abduction of 276 schoolgirls in Chibok, began its violent campaign in 2002. Despite claims from Nigerian authorities that the group has been “technically defeated,” Boko Haram continues to launch deadly assaults, undermining regional stability and worsening the humanitarian crisis.

The United Nations reports that millions remain displaced due to the violence, with many lacking access to basic services like healthcare and education. Survivors of Boko Haram’s attacks face severe stigmatization, complicating their reintegration into society. Amnesty International’s call for international attention serves as a reminder of the pressing need for immediate action, long-term recovery plans, and accountability for those responsible for the ongoing atrocities.
