Cork, 4 July 2025 – Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary, has unveiled a new five-year contract to enhance heavy cargo transport services to four inhabited islands off the coast of County Cork: Oileán Chléire (Cape Clear), Sherkin, Long Island, and Heir Island.

📦 Expanded Service Commitment
The contract, running from 2025 to 2030, will provide 70 sailing days per year, marking a 20% increase over the previous agreement. The improved schedule is designed to offer more consistent service, particularly for Oileán Chléire, the most remote and logistically challenging of the four islands.

🛳️ Operator and Funding
The service will be operated by Carbery Isle Ferries Ltd., with the Department committing €1.5 million over five years to support the initiative. The funding aligns with the government’s ‘Our Living Islands’ policy, which prioritizes sustainable transport and infrastructure for island communities.

👥 Government Statements
Minister Calleary emphasized the importance of reliable transport for island residents and businesses:

“Transport services are one of the biggest challenges for our islands. This contract ensures excellent service and reflects our commitment to vibrant island life.”

Minister of State Jerry Buttimer, TD for Cork South-Central, added:

“The increased sailing days will be especially beneficial for farming communities moving livestock during peak market seasons. This contract reinforces our support for island sustainability.”

🌊 Strategic Impact
The announcement underscores the government’s broader efforts to improve connectivity and economic resilience for Ireland’s offshore communities. With the largest number of inhabited islands located off Cork’s coast, the upgraded cargo service is expected to significantly enhance year-round accessibility and logistical support.
