Cairo/Gaza City, August 20, 2025 — The Palestinian group Hamas has formally accepted a ceasefire proposal aimed at halting the devastating war in Gaza, according to Egyptian and Qatari mediators. The plan, which includes a 60-day truce and a phased exchange of hostages and prisoners, now awaits a formal response from Israel.

🤝 Ceasefire Framework

The proposal—developed by Egypt and Qatar with backing from U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff—includes the following key provisions:

  • 60-day ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid and negotiations
  • Release of 10 living Israeli hostages and the remains of 18 others held by Hamas
  • Exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including women and minors
  • Partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza to facilitate aid delivery
  • Initiation of talks for a permanent ceasefire on day one of the truce

Hamas officials described the deal as a “middle ground” that prioritizes national interests and civilian protection. Islamic Jihad, another Palestinian faction, has also endorsed the proposal.

🇮🇱 Israel’s Position

As of Tuesday, Israel has not issued a formal response. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed receipt of the proposal and stated that it is under review. However, senior Israeli officials have reiterated that any agreement must include:

  • Release of all remaining hostages (estimated at 50, with 20 believed alive)
  • Disarmament of Hamas
  • Demilitarization of Gaza
  • Installation of a non-Hamas governing authority

Netanyahu faces pressure from both hardline ministers opposing any truce and tens of thousands of Israeli citizens who have rallied in support of a deal to bring hostages home.

đź’Ą Humanitarian Crisis

The war, which began in October 2023 following Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel, has led to catastrophic losses:

  • Over 62,000 Palestinians killed, according to Gaza’s health ministry
  • More than 156,000 injured
  • Widespread famine and displacement, with 90% of homes damaged or destroyed
  • UN agencies report hundreds of aid workers killed, and schools turned into shelters have become targets

🌍 Diplomatic Outlook

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari confirmed that the current proposal is “98% identical” to the earlier U.S.-backed plan and represents a critical opportunity to end hostilities. Mediators have urged Israel to respond swiftly, warning that failure to reach an agreement could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.

Hamas has emphasized its flexibility and commitment to ending the war, while seeking written guarantees from the U.S. to prevent future resumption of hostilities.
