WELLINGTON — China’s embassy in New Zealand has lodged a formal complaint with the New Zealand government over what it described as the “harassment” of Chinese nationals at airports.
The diplomatic protest follows an incident in which a Chinese traveller was reportedly compelled to surrender electronic devices during border screening procedures. The embassy cited the case as indicative of broader concerns regarding the treatment of its citizens upon arrival in New Zealand.
In a statement, the embassy urged Wellington to ensure that the rights of Chinese nationals are respected and that airport procedures are conducted in a fair and non-discriminatory manner. New Zealand authorities have not publicly responded to the complaint.
The incident comes amid heightened global scrutiny of border security practices and data privacy, particularly in relation to electronic device searches. It remains unclear whether the case cited by the embassy involved any breach of New Zealand law or standard protocol.
