Japanese medical technology company Terumo Corporation has announced the acquisition of Oxford-based OrganOx, a leading innovator in organ preservation devices, in a deal valued at approximately ÂŁ1.1 billion ($1.5 billion USD).
Founded in 2008 as a spinout from the University of Oxford, OrganOx specializes in Normothermic Machine Perfusion (NMP) technology, which enables donor organs to be preserved at near-body temperature, improving transplant outcomes and expanding the pool of viable organs.
The acquisition marks Terumoâs strategic entry into the organ transplantation sector, a field with growing global demand and significant unmet medical needs. OrganOx will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Terumo, with plans to leverage the Japanese firmâs global infrastructure to accelerate adoption of its technology.
The transaction also represents the largest exit for an Oxford University spinout to date, underscoring the commercial potential of UK biomedical innovation.
