London, 7 July 2025 – Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora Neale Richmond TD has officially launched the Global Irish Survey, a landmark online consultation aimed at capturing the views of Irish communities abroad and recent returnees. The initiative forms part of the Irish Government’s commitment to develop a new Diaspora Strategy, with the current framework set to expire at the end of 2025.

During his visit to London, Minister Richmond met with a broad cross-section of the Irish community in Southern England and Wales, including representatives from business, sport, culture, academia, and community care sectors. The consultation builds on previous engagements in Nairobi, Brussels, Boston, Philadelphia, Manchester, and Glasgow, with further sessions planned across the Middle East, North America, and Ireland.

“I am launching the first ever Global Irish Survey so we hear from as many voices as possible to ensure our new diaspora strategy reflects our contemporary diaspora,” Richmond said.

📝 Survey Details and Strategic Goals

  • The Global Irish Survey is available at Ireland.ie and remains open until 31 August 2025
  • It includes multiple-choice questions and reflective prompts, designed to gather insights from long-standing emigrants, newer arrivals, and the affinity diaspora
  • All responses are anonymous, and the data will inform both the upcoming strategy and future biennial surveys

Richmond emphasized the diaspora’s potential to support trade and investment, noting that many Irish abroad hold influential global positions and maintain extensive business networks.

🤝 Diplomatic Engagement

In addition to diaspora consultations, Minister Richmond met with UK Development Minister Baroness Jenny Chapman to discuss international development and humanitarian assistance, reinforcing Ireland’s global outreach and cooperation efforts.
