The airplane carrying European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen experienced GPS jamming while en route to Bulgaria on Sunday, according to an EU spokesperson who confirmed earlier media reports.
The incident occurred as the aircraft approached Plovdiv International Airport in southern Bulgaria. Despite the disruption, the plane landed safely using ground-based navigation systems. Bulgarian authorities suspect the interference was caused by external signals, with preliminary assessments pointing to possible Russian involvement.
Von der Leyen was traveling as part of a multi-country tour of EU member states bordering Russia and Belarus, aimed at reinforcing regional security cooperation. The European Commission noted that similar jamming and spoofing activities have been reported across the region in recent months.
The event has prompted renewed calls within the EU to strengthen defense capabilities and safeguard critical infrastructure from hybrid threats.
