Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially launched its Asia Pacific (Auckland) Region, backed by a NZD 7.5 billion (USD 4.4 billion) investment aimed at expanding cloud infrastructure across New Zealand. The initiative marks one of the largest technology investments in the country’s history.

The new AWS Region includes three Availability Zones and is expected to support an average of 1,000 full-time equivalent jobs annually. The investment will contribute approximately NZD 10.8 billion to New Zealand’s GDP over the next 15 years, according to AWS’s economic impact study.

The infrastructure will enable local businesses, government agencies, and educational institutions to run workloads and store data within New Zealand, improving latency and meeting data residency requirements. Customers already using AWS services in the country include Xero, TVNZ, Kiwibank, and the University of Auckland.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described the launch as “historic,” highlighting its role in positioning New Zealand as a growing digital hub in the Asia Pacific region.
