GENEVA, August 18, 2025 — Monday marks seven years since the passing of former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, a statesman widely revered for his unwavering commitment to peace, human rights, and multilateral diplomacy. Annan died on August 18, 2018, in Switzerland at the age of 80, following a brief illness.
Born in Kumasi, Ghana, in 1938, Annan became the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations in 1997—the first to rise from within the ranks of the organization.
