Khartoum, Sudan — August 20, 2025
A prominent Sudanese human rights watchdog has accused the country’s military and security forces of torturing detainees to death and operating covert “execution chambers” in the capital, Khartoum. The allegations, made by the Emergency Lawyers group, come amid a deepening humanitarian crisis and ongoing civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

🚨 Allegations of Systematic Abuse

Emergency Lawyers reported that it had documented hundreds of arbitrary arrests in Khartoum since the army recaptured the city from RSF forces in March. In its latest statement, the group described a “dangerous escalation in violations,” including:

  • Random detentions without due process
  • Inhumane conditions in large detention centers
  • Sham trials conducted by security agencies
  • Detainees released in poor health or found dead with signs of torture

The group claims that in the most severe cases, individuals were declared dead as a result of torture or were killed while in custody. These practices, it said, echo the repressive tactics used under former president Omar al-Bashir’s regime.

🧾 Lack of Official Response

As of publication, the Sudanese army has not issued a formal response to the allegations, despite repeated requests for comment from international media outlets including the BBC.

⚔️ Atrocities on Both Sides

The Emergency Lawyers group has previously documented abuses committed by both the army and the RSF throughout the two-year conflict, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives. In March, the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan reported a “widespread pattern of arbitrary detention, torture, and ill-treatment” by both factions. The report also cited the use of rape, sexual violence, and extrajudicial killings.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Humanitarian Fallout

The war has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian emergencies:

  • Over 12 million people have been displaced
  • Famine has been declared in several regions
  • Healthcare systems have collapsed under pressure

Last week, medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported nearly 100,000 cases of cholera and 2,470 related deaths over the past year, marking the worst outbreak in recent Sudanese history.

🔍 Calls for Accountability

Human rights advocates are urging international bodies to investigate the claims and hold perpetrators accountable. Emergency Lawyers has called for the immediate release of detainees, transparency regarding missing persons, and an end to arbitrary arrests.

As Sudan’s civil war continues to devastate the country, the latest allegations underscore the urgent need for international attention and humanitarian intervention.
