His passing was confirmed in a statement posted to his official Facebook page, which described his final days as marked by “a long and courageous battle.”

Caprio served on the bench in Providence for nearly four decades, earning national and international recognition through his televised courtroom series Caught in Providence. The show, which aired locally and later gained global popularity online, featured real-life cases involving minor infractions such as traffic violations. Caprio’s thoughtful and often humorous interactions with defendants earned him the moniker “America’s Nicest Judge.”
His rulings, frequently infused with empathy and personal encouragement, resonated with millions of viewers across platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. Born on November 23, 1936, Caprio grew up in Providence in an Italian-American household. Before entering law, he taught American government at Hope High School while attending night classes at Suffolk University Law School in Boston. He was appointed to the municipal bench in 1985 and served until his retirement in 2023.
In 2024, Caprio published Compassion in the Court, a memoir reflecting on his life, career, and the philosophy that guided his judicial decisions.
